Overview

Orihuela is a city of centuries of history, cherished for its narrow streets and squares, its sumptuous palaces, its grand monasteries and cathedrals, and its rich museum collections.

The river Segura flows through Orihuela, perched at the foot of a hill, where an 8th-century castle defends the town’s tranquillity.
During the Muslim period, Orihuela was a major fortified town.
During the Christian period, Orihuela became the religious center of the area. The Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace are located here. Spain’s best architects, painters, and sculptors are involved in the building of the Cathedral, the Church of St James, and the Santo Domingo Monastery.
